This new report draws upon a range of data sources and published insights to build up a comprehensive picture of the current state of poverty across the UK.
Here is a summary of the key findings:
- UK poverty levels are broadly flat – around 2 in 10 adults and 3 in 10 children in the UK are living in poverty.
- Around 4 in 10 of those in poverty were within very deep poverty, with an income below the standard poverty line.
- Some groups experience unacceptably high rates of poverty – families with children, minority ethnic groups, disabled people, informal carers, people in workless households, social and private renters and people claiming income-related benefits.
- Poverty rates vary significantly between the different UK nations and regions – Yorkshire & Humber has a poverty rate of 23%, the 4th worst region in England.
The report recommends actions to be taken across critical areas, with the following being most relevant to funders:
- Offer help and space to those looking for work to find a secure job that sticks.
- Help people accrue modest savings, access affordable credit and gain relief from problem debt.
- Expand access to affordable, decent, secure homes, whether rented or owned.
- Make services as easy as possible to access and collaborate on shared priorities, such as supporting individuals into work.
